Capturing the U.S. Outbound Traveler in 2026
U.S. demand for international travel remains strong, but more selective than ever. Our team from Trove Tourism Development Advisors completed a survey of US travelers on their sentiment towards traveling abroad, as well as around how geopolitical uncertainty, safety, and rising economic costs might impact their willingness to travel abroad.
Rising costs are the biggest headwind, with over 70% saying higher prices are reducing how often they travel internationally.
At the same time, travel remains a priority, with 79% of travelers continuing to prioritize international travel even during periods of economic or geopolitical uncertainty
However, perception plays a growing role, as 52% of travelers say they are highly sensitive to negative news about destinations, influencing how and where they choose to travel
Why is this report important? In today’s global environment, travel decisions are increasingly shaped by external factors, from geopolitical tensions in regions like the Middle East to economic uncertainty and shifting media narratives.
For destinations, this means that attracting U.S. travelers is no longer just about awareness or inspiration. It requires building confidence, communicating stability, and clearly demonstrating value.
As travelers become more selective and risk-aware, destinations that proactively manage perception and address these concerns will be best positioned to capture demand in an increasingly competitive market.
