Trove Releases Report in April 2025 After Surveying US Travelers on International Travel

In recent months, U.S. outbound travelers have drawn considerable media attention as global dynamics continue to shift. Outlets like Reuters have reported a dip in travel and lodging expenditures, with many Americans adopting more cautious measures—such as purchasing “Cancel for Any Reason” insurance—to protect their plans.

Yet there is ample reason for optimism. The latest data shows a strong rebound in U.S. outbound travel, with over 6.5 million Americans flying overseas in March alone—marking a 22% increase compared to 2019. This momentum is driven by a continued desire to explore the world, celebrate life events, and reconnect with international destinations. Though travel behaviors have adjusted—with greater focus on flexibility, value, and safety—the core enthusiasm for global experiences remains as vibrant as ever.

To help places better understand this audience, the Trove team surveyed a randomized sample of frequent U.S. travelers in April 2025, analyzing trip-planning habits, travel values, and destination preferences.

US travelers are more prepared—and more eager—than ever to explore the world. A majority of respondents (51.7%) reported taking their last international trip in 2023, with fewer having traveled abroad in 2022 (13.6%) and 2021 (7.6%)—a clear sign of post-COVID recovery. Cost remains a barrier. Affordable flights and accommodations are the top booking challenge (58.5%), alongside concerns about weather, transportation, and unplanned expenses. Travelers prioritize flights and accessibility (26.6%), excursions (25.5%), and accommodations and dining (19.2%) when budgeting. Accommodation alone accounts for the largest share of trip spending (27%).
